On an island known for its dramatic volcanic cliffs, whitewashed domes, and the deep azure of the Aegean Sea, it takes something truly extraordinary to steal the spotlight from the scenery. Yet, tucked away in the winding paths of Firostefani, perched between the bustling hub of Fira and the sunset-famous Oia, lies a subterranean sanctuary that has done just that.

Atlantis Books is more than a retail space, it is a legendary literary cave. Founded two decades ago by a group of young expats who realized the island lacked a proper bookshop, it has become a global pilgrimage site. For reviewer Farandolae, this wasn't just a shopping stop but it was the definitive highlight of their Grecian holiday.

The Review in Full: A 5-Star Odyssey

Rated: 5/5 Stars by Farandolae

"One of the best & loveliest book stores on the Planet. I never expected that a huge highlight to a holiday in Santorini would be a bookshop, but life surprises you like that sometimes! This store on the way from our apartment to Fira was just a joy. Everything was a treat from the music, the selection of books in Greek and in translation to the fab people that work there. We were in 7th Heaven! I would return to Santorini only to visit this store, I was in my happy place and then some."

The Subterranean Symphony

Walking into Atlantis is a sensory experience that Farandolae describes as "7th Heaven." You descend a narrow, steep flight of stairs into a cool, cave-like interior where every inch of wall space is claimed by wood-hewn shelves.

The "music" mentioned in the review often serves as the heartbeat of the shop, blending with the sound of the wind whipping across the caldera outside. It is a space that feels hand-built and curated with love from the quotes painted on the ceiling beams to the hidden nooks where you can lose track of time. It is a "happy place" specifically because it feels untouched by the commercial gloss of the surrounding luxury resorts.

A Tower of Babel in the Cyclades

The "superb" diversity of the selection is what truly surprised Farandolae. Atlantis isn't just a place for beach reads; it is a serious literary hub.

  • The Linguistic Mix: As noted, the selection spans Greek classics, modern translations, and a vast array of English, French, and Italian titles.

  • The Atlantis Press: The shop even features its own hand-bound editions and a small letterpress, producing beautiful pamphlets and books that are exclusive to the store.

  • Rare Treasures: Tucked among the paperbacks are first editions and rare antiquarian finds that justify its reputation as one of the "best bookstores on the planet."

The "Fab" Guardians of the Cave

The "fab people" Farandolae highlights are the lifeblood of Atlantis. The shop is famous for its communal living philosophy; staff members (often writers and artists themselves) live on-site, creating a "passionate and knowledgeable" environment. They don't just sell books; they discuss them, offer coffee, and share the storied history of how a group of friends turned a captain’s old house into a world-renowned landmark.

A Surprise Highlight

The basis of this 5-star experience is the element of surprise. In a location where tourists expect to focus on the views and the food, Atlantis Books offers an intellectual and emotional depth that "surprises you."

  • The "Socialist Utopia" Model: The shop succeeds because it prioritizes the love of books over the efficiency of a typical shop.

  • Location: Situated in Firostefani, it offers a slightly more "hidden" feel than the main tourist drags, allowing for the peaceful discovery Farandolae cherished.

Worth the Voyage

Farandolae’s review serves as a reminder that the best travel experiences are often the ones we didn't plan for. The Atlantis Books has managed to become a destination so powerful that it rivals the caldera itself. To visit is to descend into a world of ink and imagination, leaving you, as the review so beautifully puts it, in "7th Heaven and then some."
